Allen Smith leads novice and experienced gardeners through the steps for fashioning garden rooms used for separate functions such as dining, entertaining, relaxing or playing. In each half hour episode, you’ll recognize how to use the key elements of design to create areas for relaxing after a busy day, places for friends and family to gather or offer sanctuary to plants and wildlife. P. Allen travels throughout the country and Europe, touring gardens of all sizes and descriptions, and shows you how to successfully adapt these ideas to your own yard.

The Rose Show
Allen devotes an entire show to one of his favorite flowers, roses! Allen makes a trip to the Southampton Rose Society to visit with a Rosarian and also drops in on the Madoo Conservancy and talks to Robert Dash about his amazing rose garden. We'll get some rose care tips, find out what plants are good companions for roses and sink our teeth into a delicious fresh from the garden salad with Allen and guest, Chef Capi Peck.
The Food Show
Join Allen as he explores Mt. Vernon Estate for a history lesson on the vegetables and herbs that George and Martha Washington grew in their gardens. Allen examines the rosemary hedges at Mt. Vernon and what it takes to care for this versatile herb. Allen also looks at Mt. Vernon's abundance of Fig trees that grow on the estate and shares his delicious fig preserve recipe. He also shares tomato planting tips from his farm and we learn how to plant sweet potato vine.
Entry with Impact
This show is all about entryways that pack a punch! Allen gives a tour of the breathtaking Daffodil Hill at the Garden Home Retreat. He talks about color and daffodils, plus clustering containers for a bold affect. We'll also learn about beautiful houseplants and an interesting and cheap way to light a path. Joining Allen in the kitchen to make ratatouille is guest chef, Matt McClure.
Exhibit The Season
Allen demonstrates different ways to exhibit the seasonal wonders of Mother Nature throughout your garden and home. Allen shows us the tulips in spring at the farm and his 12 foot Christmas tree with LED lights in the winter. He'll also show us how to make a mini bouquet of flowers in the summer and we'll learn about the beautiful fall foliage at Petit Jean State Park in Arkansas. Allen will also show us how to pickle okra.
The house at the Garden Home Retreat is finally complete and Allen is having a party in the garden. Allen shows us a very popular area at the farm, the outdoor kitchen, plus ideas for poolside containers. He also tells us about some beneficial insects to have in the garden and great ideas for a Halloween party.
Art and the Garden
Allen spends time in New York with artist and writer Robert Dash talking about the Madoo Conservancy often described as one of the ten best gardens in America. Next, Allen visits with sculptor and master stone carver Simon Vierty whose work is often garden sculpture. Allen next pays a visit to the renowned Longhouse Reserve. Chef Cassidee Dabney joins Allen in the kitchen to make a delicious Garden Pepper Marmalade.
Allen is all about reusing and recycling. He shows us an old cotton trailer that's been transformed into a mobile turkey pen. Allen will show you how to add whimsy to your garden by repurposing items you have laying around. We'll also learn about Xeriscaping. Indoors, Allen shows us how to mix produce and flowers for a beautiful and fun table setting. Plus, Regina Charbeneau is in the kitchen with Allen to make some interesting biscuits.
Making A Bold Statement
Allen talks about making a bold statement in a small garden by choosing the right trees, shrubs and containers. He also talks to an expert on the changes the auto industry is making to improve the environment. We'll visit Allen's insectary at the Garden Home Retreat and a beautiful Knot garden in the Hamptons. In the kitchen, Peter Brave shows Allen how to make a tasty quail recipe.
A trip to the breathtaking Cascade Mountains in Oregon proves to be a chilly but exciting adventure for Allen. He's learns about fresh greenery used during the holidays and how one million acres of Christmas trees add more oxygen to the environment. Allen also visits a garden center in Denver where Trela Phelps talks to him about transplanting orchids. We'll also talk to Kris Willey about an English inspired country garden and the planting of bare root roses at the Governors Mansion in Little Rock Arkansas. Plus, Allen jumps in the kitchen with Capi Peck to make a delicious Blackberry Peach Cobbler.
Allen hits the road to visit a few amazing garden destinations around the country including the Denver Botanic Gardens, Arlington National Cemetery and Bridge Gardens in Bridge Hampton, NY. Allen and his friend, Elizabeth Lear, take us to an amazing Parterre Garden and Labyrinth plus he talks about the air purifying ability of houseplants. In the kitchen, Allen makes a scrumptious chilled squash soup.
Structure in the Garden
Allen shows us what he did to build a raised bed in his acre garden and takes us to an incredible poolside grotto. Well also learn about an interesting window box combination and visit the Bernheim Arboretum in Clermont Kentucky to learn about their LEED Platinum Visitors center. And, you don't want to miss Allen's Asparagus with Horseradish Dip recipe.
Allen participates in a Student Career Days activity in Atlanta Georgia and talks to William Hildebolt about encouraging children to volunteer during the yearly clean up at the Arlington National Cemetery. Plus, we'll visit a garden with a dinosaur theme and a ship that's a replica of Christopher Columbus' Nina. Allen will also educate us on how chickens can help children learn plus, he has a special guest in the kitchen helping him make a vegetable pizza.
Celebrating The Winter Season Inside and Out
Allen is knee deep in snow at the Garden Home Retreat! He wanders around the farm to show us the different structures of the garden and we check to see how the chickens are coping with all of the powdery white snow. Allen also demonstrates an easy way to decorate inside with Clementines. Special guests talk to Allen about Rumford fireboxes and test the house for energy efficiency. Plus, we'll learn about the advantages of using a real Christmas tree vs. an artificial tree.
Allen is on the road in this episode. He visits gardens in Oregon to talk gladiolas, and Chicago, to visit the sensational Botanic Gardens. We also visit a beautiful daylily garden and Allen talks about buckwheat and lacewings. Allen also demonstrates how to use hydrangeas on the mantle and makes a beautiful orchid arrangement that's perfect for a hostess gift.
A Passion for Poultry
Allen is very passionate about poultry! In this episode, Allen talks turkey, chickens and ducks with a few poultry experts. He also shows us his flock of Sebastopol Goslings and the new waterfowl shelter. So if you want to learn a little more about the importance of poultry, this is the show to watch!
Bulb gardening is easier than you think. In this episode Allen gives us some tips to help us through the process, including protecting newly planted bulbs from squirrels. Allen shows us some exquisite dahlias, the secret to planting paper whites and how to make a beautiful tulip and hyacinth arrangement. We'll also visit a daffodil festival. The Duggar family visits the Garden Home Retreat for a day of fun, lunch and daffodil gathering.
In this episode, Allen explores restoration. We visit with an expert who is restoring an antique chest for the Garden Home Retreat as he demonstrates the proper way to work with antiques. Allen also shows us the newly constructed octagon buildings in the garden that were made with recycled materials and we take a trip to Mt. Vernon. Plus, we visit a garden in Chicago and talk to an expert about restoration tile.
Allen is in the Argenta District of North Little Rock where a special event to benefit The Susan G. Komen Foundation is taking place. The Plant it Pink event is where the entire district is planted with 25, 000 pink tulips to honor families affected by breast cancer. Allen then travels to Chicago for visits to the Victory Gardens and The Trump Towers rooftop garden. Back home in Little Rock, Allen's staff has created their very own vegetable garden; we'll see how it's coming along.
Gardening with Kids
Getting kids out in the garden can be educational and fun! Allen shows us how to make a fun garden ornament with kids out of a recycled bowling ball. Plus, we learn how to attract butterflies to the garden and to plant sunflowers. We also visit a poultry show where Allen is teaching kids how to care for the chickens they are raising. We'll also visit a garden in Kentucky and watch Allen swing from the trees on a zip line in North Arkansas.
We go inside the Garden Home Retreat where Allen demonstrates techniques to enhance the look of your home. Allen visits with experts about making Artisan Lamps, using shades in windows and freshens up a room by adding a few things from the garden. Allen also shows us how to use houseplants throughout the seasons.
The Water Show
Allen focuses on water in this episode. From fountains in the garden to drought-tolerant plants, Allen keeps it fun! Allen will also demonstrate how to make a galvanized bucket feel a little more at home in nature and teaches us how to make an herbal ice bowl. Allen also talks to an expert on pine straw and how to use it for erosion control. Plus, we'll learn about water features and how to make bath blends out of fresh herbs.
