In Fringe Benefits, host Katie DeTar discovers unique destinations, embarks on outdoor adventures, tours historic sights, and soaks up the local flavor in and around American cities. Driven by deep interest in travel, Katie seeks off-the-beaten path experiences. Each episode begins with Katie in the city center before she sets off to explore nearby villages, scenic highlights, shopping, regional fare and relaxing getaways found on the city's fringes.

Episode #101H · We explore the seaside and Civil War history of the Baltimore area with visits to Havre de Grace and Frederick, MD. Katie gets up close with hawks and snakes at a nature reserve, and explores local cuisine in the Hampden neighborhood, just outside center-city Baltimore. Katie visits the most haunted town in the United States, before heading to the bay for a sailing lesson.


Episode #102H · This former rust belt city is undergoing a renaissance. We meet a French and Indian War re-enactor and learn the rich history of the region, and its important location at the "three rivers." We join an adventure guide for a bike tour through new rail-to-trail paths, and get a taste of local agriculture with a visit to the Ligonier farmers' market. We finish up as Katie takes us on a fun day through the 130-year-old Idlewild Park.

Wilmington, Nc

Episode #103H · It's all about seaside charm and character in Wilmington, NC. We explore a historic waterfront botanical garden and it's historic Giant Oak. Katie takes a challenging and fun surfing lesson, and heads to Fort Fisher Aquarium to learn about sea turtle rescue. We meet a local chef as a guide to selecting great local seafood from the fishmongers, and connect with history at a former plantation.


Episode #104H · Katie brings viewers along on a two-season adventure in and around Buffalo. We begin in the beautiful fall colors for a magical hike through an outdoor sculpture park and a visit to the 19th century at the largest museum in New York State. Katie explores Frank Lloyd Wright's Lake Erie masterpiece as it's remodeled. As the snow falls, we take a skiing lesson south of Buffalo, and visit an indoor desert and rainforest at the Botanical Gardens - on one of the coldest days of the year.


Episode #105H · Hartford is a literary and cultural city again on the rise! We'll explore the Mark Twain homestead and see the writing desk where he crafted some of his best-loved novels. Then, we take a historic steam train ride to Deep River Landing, where we catch a Mississippi-style riverboat for a cruise along the Connecticut River. At the New England Air Museum, Katie climbs aboard a WWII-era plane and gets and up-close view of a B-29 Bomber, before wrapping up our visit to the Constitution State with a walking tour of the oldest town in Connecticut.


Episode #106H · It's all about horses as Katie learns the history of the Kentucky Derby and takes a riding lesson from a local pro. Then we head out in nature to explore one of the largest arboretums and forest preserves in the region - and see the "Kentucky Knobs." Just east of the city, we explore Bardstown, home of "My Old Kentucky Home" and the center of bourbon distilling. Later on, we head just north of Louisville, into southern Indiana, for an impressive tour of the giant, underground Squire Boone Caverns.


Episode #201 · Come along as Katie takes a ride around the track at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway in a real Indy Car! We'll learn more about the history of the "brickyard" and get up close to historic racecars and trophies. Then, we'll learn about the early settlers to Indiana and take a hot air balloon ride at Connor Prairie - a 19th-century living history museum. Later on, we find a calming spot to spend the day near Bloomington, Indiana, and enjoy a surprise visit to the Dalai Lama's private apartment, before cooking up a great meal and learning all about grilling at a favorite local spot.
